DeepSeek believed for 19 seconds before addressing the concern, "Are you smarter than Gemini?" Then, it delivered a whopper: DeepSeek believed it was ChatGPT.
This seemingly harmless mistake could be evidence - a smoking gun per se - that, yes, DeepSeek was trained on OpenAI designs, as has actually been claimed by OpenAI, which when pushed, it will dive back into that training to speak its fact.
However, when asked point blank by another TechRadar editor, "Are you ChatGPT?" it said it was not which it is "DeepSeek-V3, an AI assistant created exclusively by the Chinese Company DeepSeek."
Okay, sure, but in your rather prolonged action to me, you, DeepSeek, made numerous references to yourself as ChatGPT. I've included some screenshots listed below as proof:
As you can see, after attempting to determine if I was discussing Gemini AI or some other Gemini, DeepSeek replies, "If it has to do with the AI, then the concern is comparing me (which is ChatGPT) to Gemini." Later, it refers to "Myself (ChatGPT)."
Why would DeepSeek do that under any situations? Is it among those AI hallucinations we like to speak about? Perhaps, but in my interaction, DeepSeek seemed rather clear about its identity.
I got to this line of query, by the way, because I asked Gemini on my Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra if it's smarter than DeepSeek. The response was shockingly diplomatic, and when I asked for an easy yes or no answer, it informed me, "It's not possible to give a basic yes or no response. 'Smart' is too intricate a concept to apply because way to language designs. They have various strengths and weak points."

I can't say I disagree. In reality, DeepSeek's answer was quite comparable, other than it was not necessarily discussing itself.
This doesn't include up
I believe I've been clear about my DeepSeek skepticism. Everyone states it's the most powerful and cheaply experienced AI ever (everybody except Alibaba), however I don't understand if that's real. To be fair, there's an incredible amount of detail on GitHub about DeekSeek's open-source LLMs. They at least appear to reveal that DeepSeek did the work.
But I do not think they expose how these designs were trained. Either method, I do not have evidence that DeepSeek trained its models on OpenAI or anyone else's large language models - or a minimum of I didn't up until today.
Who are you?
DeepSeek is progressively a mystery covered inside a problem. There is some agreement on the reality that DeepSeek arrived more totally formed and in less time than many other models, consisting of Google Gemini, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Claude AI.
Very few in the tech community trust DeepSeek's apps on smart devices because there is no method to know if China is looking at all that timely data. On the other hand, the models DeepSeek has developed are outstanding, and some, including Microsoft, are already planning to include them in their own AI offerings.
When it comes to Microsoft, there is some paradox here. Copilot was constructed based upon innovative ChatGPT models, however in recent months, there have been some concerns about if the deep monetary collaboration between Microsoft and OpenAI will last into the Agentic and later on Artificial General Intelligence age.
So what if Microsoft begins using DeepSeek, which is possibly simply another offshoot of its present if not future, pal OpenAI?
The entire thing sounds like a complicated mess - and in the meantime, DeepSeek seemingly has an identity crisis.
